History

Started in 1945, the Secours populaire français has inherited from many mutual aid movements which have made a mark in our country and Europe as showed in the motto : « Tout ce qui est humain est nôtre »
(« all what is human is ours »)

Men and women who have built, step by step, this big movement of solidarity, get individually or together, their motivation in the huge Christian solidarity and Charity traditions as fraternity was deep-rooted in the 17th century French Philosopher ideas, as equality and justice were issued from the workers movement in the 19th and 20th centuries, leading to the creation of the Secours Rouge ("Red Relief") in 1926, then to the Secours populaire de France et des Colonies ("French and Colonies People Relief Association") in 1936.
Through the years, the Secours populaire français has greatly evolved. Its orientation, its conduct rules, its language renewed while asserting its project. They have little in common with what they were originally.
For a long time yet, the Secours populaire français purpose is to gather people with character values, whatever their other engagements, their political, philosophical or religious sympathies, without any distinction based on race, sex, age, or social level. The aim consists in practicing common solidarity actions, acting on real life drama towards individual people or groups, whatever the causes of their problems.
As a large decentralized movement, the 20th century Secours populaire français is an area of freedom made of 98 departmental and professional federations, 699 committees and 4,000 antennas. Without feeling recruited for a specific cause, it allows anyone with a heart to invest itself personally in practicing solidarity.
